Good News For Those Considering a Visit to the Hermitage!

Access from the north (via Monterey and points beyond) and the south is now easily available via Highway 1 from both directions.

Many GPS mapping programs do not work properly on this remote coast, and may not give accurate locations or directions.  Additionally, there is no cell phone service on the coast of Big Sur, so be sure to write down directions carefully before you leave for your trip here.

IF YOU ARE COMING FROM THE NORTH (Monterey, Carmel, San Francisco, etc.): we are located 50 miles south of Rio Rd and Highway 1 in Carmel, on Highway 1 (about 1 hr, 15 min drive). This intersection (called “The Crossroads”) is your last chance for reasonably priced gasoline, so fill up your tank! Watch for highway signs directing you to Lucia – we are in Lucia and our driveway is located just 1/2 mile south of the Lucia Lodge, on the left hand side of the highway. Our driveway entrance has a warning sign 500 feet before you reach it, and the driveway entrance is clearly marked with a large wooden sign and cross. Note: once you get to the famous Bixby Bridge, you have 37 miles left to get to our driveway.  If you get to Limekiln State Park, you’ve passed us; turn around and go back 1 mile. Once you get to Limekiln State Park, you have about 1 mile left to go. Our driveway entrance has a warning sign 500 feet before you reach it, and the driveway entrance is clearly marked with a large wooden sign and cross.
